Will Owsley RIP

Just found out that Will Owsley - releasing records as Owsley - took his own life. Actually this happened in April, but he was so obscure I didn't find out about it until just now. He leaves behind three amazing powerpop records that always will be cherished. Here's some more info from Addicted to Vinyl.

Seems these things been happening all the time these last few months starting with Vic Chesnutts suicide in late December. Mark Linkous also took his own life a few months later. Big Star singer and bassist Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel has also passed away. And the list goes on.

Seven Inch #1

New feature! I've always liked these little things, and I've been collecting them for well over a decade. Meaning I've got a lot of them stored up in my apartment. They get played too, but not as often as I'd like. I still think it's nice, in a geeky way, to have a few beers and play seven inches all night long. Anyways, I like features and I like 7" records so here goes:

The Panoply Academy Legionnaires - Diurnally Yours (2001)

The Panoply Academy play a chaotic form of indierock, too chaotic too ever attract a big following (but who cares about that anyway.) Getting started in the late 90s they were simply called The Panoply Academy, with each change within the band they changed they're bandname a little, before they were the Legionnaires they were called Corps of Engineers and before that they were Glee Club.

I bought the record around 2003, back when everything from the Secretly Canadian label appealed to me. I was already into Songs: Ohia, Danielson and others, and between customers in the record store were I worked I checked out the database for something interesting to order. Most of the stuff never came anyway, this was especially true with vinyl records , so I just ordered a lot of different records.

This one came however, but the reason I like this record has little to do with the music or the band itself, or the record label for that matter. (I also bought the acapella-cd The Unaccompanied Voice from Secretly Canadian..what's up with that?) No, the reason I like it..is the cover. Handpainted (or sprayed, probably) it looks like nothing else in my collection. I love when musicians do things like this. If you're releasing a record in a couple of hundred copies why not do something special.
